One evening in January 1970 I was having a drink with Barry Humphries<\/a> in the Mucky Duck. [\u2026]
\nA few months earlier, he told me, he had been asked by the Daily Mail<\/em> to write an article about Ned Kelly, the nineteenth-century Australian outlaw, and had duly turned up in the features room one evening in merry mood and clutching a bottle of whisky. He spent many congenial moments chatting with Gordon McKenzie, the assistant editor in charge of features, and such other department executives as Alwyn Robinson and Peter Dobereiner before, the evening by now well advanced, they left him alone in Gordon\u2019s room to get on with it while they went home.
\nAround midnight, Arthur Brittenden, the editor, was prowling the corridors and heard odd, muffled noises coming from Gordon\u2019s darkened office. He went in, switched on the light and found Humphries asleep on the floor, snoring gently. \u2018G\u2019day,\u2019 said Humphries waking up and greeting the intruder courteously.
\n\u2018Hello,\u2019 said Arthur. \u2018Who are you?\u2019
\n\u2018I\u2019m Barry Humphries. Who are you?\u2019
\n\u2018Well,\u2019 said Arthur, \u2018I\u2019m the editor of the Daily Mail<\/em>.\u2019
\n\u2018Oh, shit, what a bastard of a job,\u2019 said Humphries. \u2018You poor sod, you shouldn\u2019t be here at this time of the night, man in your position.\u2019
\nArthur thanked him for his sympathy and asked what he was doing there.
\n\u2018I\u2019m writing an article for you,\u2019 Humphries said.
\n\u2018Oh well, in that case I shan\u2019t disturb you.\u2019
\n\u2018Okay, sport,\u2019 Humphries said. \u2018Switch the light off on your way out, will you?\u2019
\nBy morning he had gone. The article never did get written.<\/p>\n

On a d\u00e9couvert par un documentaire<\/a> l\u2019existence de Barry Norman (1933-2017), qui fut durant vingt-six ans le Monsieur Cin\u00e9ma de la BBC, o\u00f9 il animait une \u00e9mission hebdomadaire consacr\u00e9e \u00e0 l\u2019actualit\u00e9 des sorties en salles et pr\u00e9sentait des rediffusions de classiques. Fils du monteur et r\u00e9alisateur Leslie Norman, il avait grandi dans une ambiance cin\u00e9phile et fait ses d\u00e9buts de journaliste au bas de l\u2019\u00e9chelle, comme r\u00e9dacteur de potins pour des tablo\u00efds. Son go\u00fbt \u00e9tait plut\u00f4t mainstream<\/em> mais c\u2019\u00e9tait un critique d\u2019une totale int\u00e9grit\u00e9 et ses textes, r\u00e9dig\u00e9s avec esprit, s\u2019appuyaient sur une vraie culture de cin\u00e9ma. C\u2019\u00e9tait aussi un remarquable intervieweur, qui bossait ses sujets et laissait parler ses invit\u00e9s, sans les interrompre toutes les deux phrases pour placer la question suivante et se faire mousser \u00e0 leurs d\u00e9pens. Une autre \u00e9poque. L\u2019expression \u00ab And why not ? \u00bb \u00e9tait le leitmotiv pr\u00eat\u00e9 \u00e0 sa marionnette dans l\u2019\u00e9mission satirique Spitting Image<\/em>, quoique Norman ait toujours assur\u00e9 \u2013 \u00e0 raison, semble-t-il \u2013 ne l\u2019avoir jamais prononc\u00e9e en trente ans de carri\u00e8re radiophonique et t\u00e9l\u00e9visuelle. Outre ses sympathiques m\u00e9moires, il est l\u2019auteur de plusieurs romans policiers et d\u2019un livre sur le cricket, l\u2019autre grande passion de sa vie.<\/p>\n
